Treatment
According to the guidelines of the European Association of Urology (EAU) and American urological association (AUA) the PDE5 inhibitors including sildenafil, are the drugs of first-choice for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Treatment options of erectile dysfunction have undergone big changes in the past decades:
- 1970s: psychosexual therapy and penile prostheses,
- 1980s: revascularisation, vacuum constriction devices and intracavernous injection therapy,
- 1990s: transurethral and peroral medicine delivery.
The introduction of the first PDE5 inhibitor, sildenafil, in 1998 has literally revolutionarized the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The treatment got much easier and was no longer painful. The tablets turned out to be very effective and were also well tolerated by men which tremendously increased the interest for this type of treatment. An increasing number of men started seeking help for erectile dysfunction, among them many men who considered the earlier treatment options unsuitable for themselves.
